Polis

Bion, Demon, Nyx and Simon all served Corinth. Corinth's history might not of been as glorious as Sparta or Athens but we achieved many great goals. We were important to Greece. Geography made our location perfect for trading ships and enviable. Corinth lies on the western part of the isthmus which separates Sparta and Athens. We were the main trade center. Two gulfs and the best natural acropolis in all Greece. Sailors form all over the Mediterranean came to Corinth for trading. Around 480 B.C there was a population of around 50,000 free citizens and 60,000 slaves. Because of this there was very few leaders. The people of Corinth made pottery, bronze statues, and vase paintings. A good tyrant named Cypselus took over the government and advanced and brought prosperity and order to the polis. Periander was leader for 40 years and as he was in order he brought more changes. He made more laws and order, encouraged Corinth business, supported literature and art, and made Corinth one of Greece's foremost city-states. He lowered taxes, set up coinage, and solved the city's unemployment problems. But he feel into madness and killed one of his mistresses and banished hs son. He was considered one of the "Seven Wise Men of Ancient Greece."
